Empowering the Immigrant Community: CATA’s Outreach in the First Quarter of 2025

The beginning of 2025 has been a pivotal time for the immigrant community. From Know Your Rights workshops to DACA renewal clinics and legal support events, CATA has been on the ground providing vital resources and education to farmworkers and immigrant families across the region.

In this blog, we share highlights from our outreach so far this year, including:

Who’s fighting for immigrant justice in New Jersey? We are

In this blog, CATA’s Fight for Justice: Advocacy Efforts in Early 2025, our Policy and Advocacy Organizer Meghan Hurley recaps the powerful work our team and allies have been doing to advance immigrant rights, worker protections, and wage justice across New Jersey.

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

  • Pushed for the Immigrant Trust Act to ensure safety and trust in immigrant communities
  • Testified in support of heat protections for farmworkers facing dangerous working conditions
  • Fought in court for equal pay and overtime protections for NJ farmworkers left out of basic labor rights

Federal budget cuts are threatening the programs that bring fresh, healthy, local food to our schools, food banks, and communities—and the impact is already being felt.

In our latest blog post, CATA’s Food Justice Coordinator, Kathia Ramirez, breaks down what’s at stake after $26 million in funding was slashed from vital programs like the Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program in New Jersey.

These programs didn’t just feed families—they supported sustainable agriculture, helped small farmers thrive, and gave kids better access to nutritious meals. Now, schools, farmers, and families are left to fill in the gaps.
