At the end of June, we said goodbye to Kendra Prat, an organizer working with us for the past two years. We are so grateful to Kendra for her time with us. She came at the height of the pandemic in July of 2020.

She worked with dedication to connect with our immigrant and farmworker community and to assist them in finding the resources and support they needed for the issues they were facing in work and life. We will miss Kendra, but we wish her the best as she moves back out west to Oregon to spend more time with her family!

Our interactive training for farmworkers at on-farm labor camps allows workers to discuss issues they see in their workplaces and what steps to take to resolve them.

During our trainings, we have spoken about: 

• COVID-19 infection prevention
• Pesticide exposure
• Heatstroke
• HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention 

The Pesticide Safety workshop was especially popular in Cumberland and Atlantic Counties in New Jersey. We talked about how to apply pesticides safely and the employer's responsibility to train workers yearly about the safe use of pesticides. 

Farmworkers' main concerns regarding pesticides were related to adequate personal protective equipment and farmers' obligation to place signs indicating the type of pesticide they applied on the crops. When workers know the name of the pesticide used, they could determine the time required to reenter the crop and have appropriate medical attention if exposed.

The Farm Workforce Modernization Act (FWMA) is an anti-labor bill that will hurt farmworkers for generations. It expands E-Verify and a flawed H-2A program while tying the possibility of immigration status to eight years of exploitation.

The agriculture industry says they need this bill to deal with labor shortages and rising food costs, but there wouldn’t be shortages if growers paid higher wages and had better conditions. This bill will only boost profits for the agriculture industry and food corporations that are gouging prices on the backs of workers and their communities.

Join us in saying no to laws that divide workers and expand exploitation, and yes to citizenship, fair wages, and better protections for all farmworkers.

The FWMA is dangerously close to getting the votes it needs to pass in the Senate. Please urge your Senator to listen to farmworkers across the country and to oppose the FWMA.

Margaret took a stained glassmaking course in her 20s and was immediately enchanted. She turned out pieces for about five years until the higher priorities of life caused her to put the stained-glass equipment away.

Twenty-five years later, Margaret decided to start her second career in stained glass. However, she soon realized she would need to start selling or giving away the pieces she was creating.
