Recent Updates on Immigration and How CATA Stands with Immigrant Families

Did you know that over 60,000 people are currently detained by ICE—most for immigration-related charges, not crimes? The federal government is expanding detention, trying to hire thousands more agents, and even proposing to exclude undocumented families from programs like Head Start and from the U.S. Census—policies that would deeply harm immigrant communities in states like New Jersey and beyond.

Meanwhile, court cases continue to shape detention centers and policing powers, with the Supreme Court even allowing ICE to use race, language, or location as reasons to stop and question people.

In this blog post, we break down these urgent developments and share how CATA is standing with immigrant workers and families—from providing “know your rights” information and resources for families, to advocating for laws that protect our communities.

Here’s how you can help today:

  • Stay Informed – Follow and share reliable updates on immigration policies.

  • Speak Up – Call or write your representatives to demand protections for immigrant families.

  • Support CATA – Volunteer, donate, or amplify immigrant stories to ensure voices are heard.

Together, we can fight for justice and dignity for immigrant workers and their families.

From Fear to Action: Building Power in Our Communities

"I still remember that first night—thirty people squeezed into a small room, restless and afraid. Families whispered about raids, workers worried about deportations, and the question everyone carried was the same: What can we do? That night, out of fear and courage, Canvassing was born."

In his blog, Manuel, a CATA Worker Organizer, shares how groups of workers and volunteers are going door-to-door—knocking, listening, and supporting each other. Week by week, neighbors are learning about their rights, how to respond if immigration officials' approach, and most importantly, that they are not alone.

What began as conversations about fear has grown into action: finding legal help, protecting families, and building networks of solidarity. Faces light up when people realize they have allies standing with them—immigrants, neighbors, volunteers, and supporters together.

This is just the beginning. The vision is to expand, reach more families, and create a community where no one feels isolated. But to grow, we need allies—people willing to donate, volunteer, and stand shoulder to shoulder with immigrant workers.

Empowering the Next Generation: Inside Our Food Justice Internship

This summer, CATA wrapped up its sixth annual Food Justice Internship program, welcoming six passionate interns for an intensive eight-week journey.

From working the soil in Bridgeton’s summer heat to learning agroecology, herbal medicine, and immigrant rights, they gained both hands-on skills and a deep understanding of food justice.

They also engaged in powerful workshops with CATA organizers and guest experts, exploring how food, labor, and justice intersect.

On August 22, we celebrated their graduation at the Bridgeton Community Garden—honoring their growth, resilience, and the seeds of justice they are planting in our communities.

Want to be a changemaker? Your support helps us prepare the next generation of food justice and immigrant rights leaders.
